Soy Jar Candles

A jar candle either burns properly or it tunnels, and which one it does was decided before it was ever poured. The wick has to be sized against the internal diameter of the jar, the wax, and how much fragrance oil is in it — three things, one calculation.

Undersized, the flame cannot melt out to the glass, so the candle burns a narrow shaft straight down and most of the wax is never used. Oversized, the wick mushrooms, smokes, blackens the glass and gets the vessel hotter than it should be. We test-burn every new combination rather than assuming.

Soy is the right default for a branded jar candle: it burns cooler and longer than paraffin, it releases fragrance gently rather than in a burst, and it cleans out of a vessel with hot soapy water, which matters if the jar is meant to be kept.

Why does my candle tunnel?

Because the wick is too small for the jar diameter, so the flame cannot melt the wax out to the glass. It is a sizing calculation, not bad luck, and it cannot be fixed once the candle is poured.

Does the first burn really matter?

Yes. Burn it until the melt pool reaches the glass all the way round — usually two to three hours. Wax has a memory, and a candle first burned for twenty minutes will tunnel for the rest of its life.
