Pillar & Votive Candles

A pillar has no jar holding it up, so the wax itself has to be structural. That means a harder blend with a higher melt point than anything we pour into glass — use a soft container wax and the pillar slumps in a warm room before it is ever lit.

It also changes how fragrance behaves. A harder wax holds less oil, so a heavily scented pillar is a compromise; we will tell you when a fragrance brief wants a jar rather than a pillar instead of overloading the wax and letting it sweat.

Votives sit between the two and are the workhorse of venue work: cheap enough to use in quantity, and burned inside a holder so the wax is contained as it liquefies.

Why did my pillar slump?

Because it was poured in a wax soft enough for a jar. A pillar is structural — it needs a harder blend with a higher melt point, or a warm room will deform it before it is even lit.

Less than a jar candle. Harder wax holds less oil, and pushing past that makes it sweat. If the brief is fragrance-led we will say so and steer you to a vessel.
