Wood Wick Candles

A wood wick burns as a wide, low flame rather than a tall one, and it makes the crackle people buy it for. It is also less forgiving than cotton, which is why a lot of wood wick candles disappoint.

Width is the whole spec. A wood wick that is too narrow drowns in its own melt pool and keeps going out; too wide and the flame is aggressive and sooty. It is matched to the vessel diameter and the wax in exactly the way a cotton wick is, but the tolerance is tighter.

Maintenance is different too, and we print it on the label rather than leaving it to a review: trim the charred edge back to a few millimetres before every burn. A wood wick that is never trimmed will not relight, and the customer will blame the candle.

It is a property of a properly sized wood wick burning with a full melt pool. A starved or untrimmed wick will not crackle, which is why the care instruction goes on the label rather than in a leaflet.
